One of the abbey’s singularities is that we only use energy from our own production.
All facilities of the abbey are run CO2-neutral with energy from the two hydropower plants that are owned by Stift Stams Ltd. A considerable amount of this green energy is fed into the local power grid.
The Abbey of Stams is also chief partner of the District Heating Stams Ltd., which not only provides the sports grammar school and several companies but also many local households with energy from woodchips. Compared to oil heating, we thus save nearly 2,000 tons of CO2 a year.
The 700 hectar-forest owned by the abbey has a commercial as well as protective function for the valley below.
Given that more than thirty people are directly employed at the abbey we belong to the most important local employers. In addition, the private grammar school we run has over 60 teachers.
The abbey continues to make a great contribution to the development of the area, and is a pioneer in sustainability.
