Living in the Abbey

As a convent, we do not cling to medieval practise. We see ourselves both as people of the 21st century and as the keepers of an 800-year tradition. We constantly try to unite our traditional way of living with the requirements of the time we live in. Like all Benedictine convents our life takes place between the two poles of „ora et labora“, of prayer and work.

Our praying times:

Weekdays

  • 6 am: Lauds
  • 6.30 am: Convent service
  • 12 am: Reading hour or terce, sixt or none
  • 5.45 pm: Vesper service
  • 7 pm: Compline

Saturdays and school holidays

  • 6.15 am: Vigil and lauds
  • 7.15 am: Convent service
  • 12 am: Terce, sixt or none
  • 5.30 pm: Vesper service
  • 7 pm: Compline

Sundays and holidays

  • 6.15 am: Vigil and lauds
  • 10.30 am: Convent service
  • 12 am: Terce, sixt or none
  • 5.30 pm: Vesper service
  • 7 pm: Compline

Between prayers, each monk will pursue his own work, but we gather again to take the meals together.

Our main tasks:

  • Pastoral care in several villages
  • Private grammar school „Meinhardinum“
  • Bakery
  • Distillery
  • Groundskeeping
  • Guided tours

Any young (or older) man who is interested in living in a convent is welcome to us.

Trying out this special way of living (naturally without obligation) is possible at any time. At present, you best contact our Abbot German Erd for that purpose.
